The Victorinox and Wenger 1989 Soldier Swiss Army knives are a 93mm / 3 1/2" ribbed alox knife, with a 1989 date on the blade tang. This model was standard issue for the Swiss army during 1989. Both versions still have a cutting notch in the bottle opener, and a hollow rivet, similar to the 1988 Soldier. Victorinox knives are more common than Wenger, with this year stamp. Some knives from both companies include a bale, but most do not. Wenger knives retain a blank square for the Waffenkontrolle stamp, but none were stamped by inspectors. The box is not present on Victorinox knives. Similar features are also present on the following 1990 Soldier.
